- Metasequoia glyptostroboides – Dawn Redwood is a fast-growing deciduous tree with a slender pyramidal to conical form. Its soft, fern-like leaves appear bright green in summer, before turning tawny-pink and gold in autumn, creating a striking seasonal display. As its name suggests, Metasequoia means “akin to Sequoia,” and the tree closely resembles the Californian Redwood. Originating in China, the Dawn Redwood thrives in temperate climates with full sun and consistently moist, well-drained soil. Highly adaptable and hardy, it grows well across a wide range of conditions, including varied soil types and urban pollution. Reaching approximately 12 x 5 metres in 10 years and maturing to 30 x 8 metres, it is best suited to parks and large open landscapes where it truly stands out.
- An abundant small tree of coastal, lowland, and lower mountain forests throughout the country. Coarsely toothed light green leaves with clusters of tiny greenish-yellow flowers followed by violet or dark blue berries loved by native birds. Whiteywood name comes from the unusual white blotches on the trunk and stems. Protect from strong winds.
- A small slow growing tree with dense, upright growth habit. Fruit is slightly larger than other satsumas. Easy peel and seedless with good flavour. Heavy cropping. The latest ripening of the satsuma group. An excellent small home garden choice. Harvest winter months over May to June.
- Malus ‘Jack Humm’ - Crab-apple is a strong growing smaller deciduous tree. Bearing masses of white tinged pink flowers from red buds in spring. In autumn clusters of large bright crimson fruit flushed orange and yellow. One of the best crab-apples for production of fruit suited for jelly’s and jams. Ideal for smaller gardens.
- A compact, multi branched shrub or small tree with lime green leaves turning golden in autumn. Soft fluffy buds open to flowers slightly larger than normal stellata and has more numerous long petals (sometimes to 36). They are also less floppy, resulting in a waterlily-like appearance (hence the cultivar name). Long lasting from apx late July. Ideal for the smaller garden.
- Magnolia stellata – Star Magnolia is a compact, deciduous shrub or small tree with a multi-branched form. In summer, lime-green leaves provide fresh colour, before turning yellow, bronze, or tan in autumn. Soft, fluffy buds open into star-shaped flowers, each with at least 12 delicate white petals. Blooming from late July, these long-lasting flowers add elegance and charm to the garden. Star Magnolia thrives in moist, well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade in a sheltered position. It is ideal for smaller gardens, courtyards, or large pots, where it can be pruned to maintain shape and height. Typically, it grows to around 3.0 x 2.5 metres, making it a versatile choice for compact spaces.
- Magnolia ‘Iolanthe’ is a deciduous tree bred in New Zealand as part of the renowned Jury hybrid series. It develops into a large, rounded tree with an open branching habit, creating a graceful structure in the landscape. During summer, leathery green leaves form a lush canopy. From early spring, the tree bursts into masses of very large, lavender-pink, bowl-shaped flowers, delivering a spectacular seasonal display. It thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered position. Growing to approximately 8 × 3.5 metres, it makes an excellent shade tree and a standout garden feature.
- Magnolia grandiflora ‘Kay Parris’ is a compact evergreen tree with upright growth that responds well to pruning. Its shiny green, wavy leaves feature coppery brown felt on the undersides, adding texture and contrast throughout the year. From spring through summer, it produces large, fragrant white flowers that enhance its ornamental appeal. As a seedling variation of ‘Little Gem’, it’s both vigorous and versatile—ideal for screening, hedging, or as a standalone feature in smaller gardens. It thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil. While it tolerates clay, avoid overly wet conditions. Typically, it reaches 4 × 3 metres and can be pruned to suit your space.
- A smaller growing New Zealand bred tree with large leathery green leaves. Huge, deep magenta flowers late winter early spring make a spectacular sight before the tree comes into leaf. Upright branches, spreading habit. From the Jury hybrid series of Magnolias.
- Lophostemon confertus – Queensland Brush Box is a large, fast-growing evergreen tree with an attractive oval shape. Its long, leathery green leaves create a lush cloud like canopy, while the rusty-brown bark peels away to reveal smooth, lighter tones beneath. During summer, creamy white flowers appear, resembling eucalyptus blooms. These are followed by woody capsules, similar to gum nuts, adding seasonal interest and texture to the tree’s display. This hardy Australian species tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and compacted ground. However, it thrives best in moist, well-drained conditions and full sun exposure. Queensland Brush Box grows to approximately 10 x 6 metres in ten years, eventually reaching 15 x 6 metres at maturity. With its dense shade and striking form, it makes an excellent specimen or shade tree for gardens and landscapes.
- Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Gumball’ is a compact deciduous feature tree prized for its naturally globe‑shaped crown. Its lush green summer foliage transforms into an impressive display of purples, oranges, reds, and yellows in autumn, creating a striking seasonal highlight.This dwarf cultivar originates from the American Sweetgum, which is native to the southeastern United States, Mexico, and Central America. It grows best in well‑drained soil and full sun, making it a versatile option for many landscapes. Because of its tidy form, Gumball suits smaller gardens, courtyards, and works beautifully when lining paths or driveways. It is typically grafted on a clear stem to form a classic lollipop shape, although lower grafts can create colourful autumn shrubs reaching about 2.5 × 2 metres. Easily trimmed to maintain preferred shape and height, ensuring it stays neat and attractive year‑round.
- A hardier selection of Tahitian lime. Fruit is small to medium in size with dark green skin, turning lime yellow at maturity. Flesh tangy, juicy and seedless. Can be eaten green or yellow. Heavy scented flowers, aromatic foliage. Trim to shape. Harvest over the winter months. (named after John T. Bearss who developed this seedless variety)
