- Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Arnold’ is a fast-growing, upright deciduous tree with a strong architectural presence making it perfect for narrow spaces. From late spring into early summer, it produces striking tulip-shaped flowers in greenish-yellow tones with orange markings. These blooms enhance its ornamental value and contribute to its distinctive charm. Because of its tidy columnar habit and resilience, ‘Arnold’ suits formal landscapes and urban environments. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, offering a stately silhouette that elevates avenues, courtyards, and confined spaces. Typically reaching 15–20 metres in height, this cultivar originated from ‘Fastigiatum’ (Upright) specimens at the Arnold Arboretum in Massachusetts. In early spring, large lobed leaves emerge with a pinky-bronze tint. As summer unfolds, they transition to a rich green. Then, in autumn, they explode into what many consider the brightest crimson-scarlet tones of any maple. To ensure healthy growth, plant it in a sunny position with moist, well-drained soil. Additionally, while it tolerates moderate wind, some shelter helps protect its vibrant foliage from damage. Ultimately, with a mature size of approximately 3 x 2 metres, 'Osakazuki' fits beautifully into smaller gardens, courtyards, or large containers. - Metrosideros excelsa 'Moon Maiden' is a striking natural hybrid of the classic New Zealand Pohutukawa. Unlike its red-flowered relatives, it blooms with sulphur-yellow flowers in December, creating a luminous display. These dazzling blossoms also produce seeds that attract and nourish small native birds, adding life and movement to your garden. As an evergreen, 'Moon Maiden' forms a broad-headed canopy, offering excellent shade. Its thick green leaves feature silver-grey undersides, adding visual depth. Metrosideros thrive in coastal environments and are impressively resilient. They endure poor soil, excess moisture, and drought, making them ideal for exposed or challenging sites. In addition, they tolerate clay and wet soils—an advantage in areas with thin or heavy ground. However, they perform best in moist, well-drained earth. - Carpinus betulus, commonly known as Hornbeam, is a deciduous tree native to Europe, admired for its versatility and elegant form. Its pale grey, short, and slightly twisted trunk adds character, making it a standout in both formal and natural landscapes. Widely favoured for hedging, Hornbeam’s branches can be easily intertwined and trimmed to form dense screens, shelters, or low hedges. It can also be pleached to create structured, architectural lines—ideal for garden borders or avenues. The tree features oval, ribbed green leaves that transform in autumn with vibrant shades of yellow and orange, eventually turning brown and remaining on the tree well into winter, offering seasonal interest. Hornbeam prefers moist, well-drained soil and adapts well to regular pruning. While it can grow to approximately 12 metres tall and 7 metres wide, it responds beautifully to shaping and can be maintained at a desired height.
- Michelia ‘Gracipes’ is a compact, evergreen tree with a rounded form, making it ideal for smaller gardens. Its dark, olive-green leaves feature a distinctive brown felt underside, adding subtle texture and year-round interest. From late winter into early spring, this wonderful tree produces small, round, perfumed cream flowers with prominent stamens. These blooms emerge from furry brown buds, creating a charming and fragrant display. For best results, plant in moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. While it is slow-growing, it responds well to trimming and can be shaped into a hedge or left to grow on showcased as a specimen tree. Interestingly, Michelia ‘Gracipes’ was bred and developed in New Zealand. Although its lineage may include Chinese species such as Michelia yunnanensis, this particular cultivar is proudly of New Zealand origin. Wheki or Brown Ponga is a hardy NZ native tree fern. It grows a tall, slender, brown trunk to approx 6m. Fronds can reach 1.5 to 3m in length which give it the appearance of a small “umbrella” on top of the trunk. It is the most popular New Zealand tree fern which is easy to grow and maintain. Hardiness and smaller dimensions make it an excellent garden variety. Its stout, leathery green leaves give it a lush, tropical appearance, ideal for adding texture to garden spaces. Native to South America, Feijoa is among the hardiest subtropical fruit trees. It tolerates light frost and produces abundant fruit from April to June, which drops easily when ripe. Sellowiana is the parent species of many popular grafted and cutting-grown cultivars. It thrives in full sun and prefers a moist, well-drained soil. Typically reaching around 4 x 3 metres tall they are easily trimmed to shape and make an excellent hedge, screen or stand-alone fruit tree. Ideal for a smaller garden.
- A handsome, fast growing, subtropical evergreen TREE with large emerald green LEAVES that forms a thick canopy. FLOWERS September to December. FRUIT range in size and shape from round cannonball to pear like. All varieties are self-fertile though the trees will produce more and better fruit if cross pollinated. To get fruiting trees it is highly recommended to get a grafted tree and then generally require a few years to mature before fruiting. Stone grown trees may not produce fruit.
