A smaller tree having very compact, upright growth which responds well to pruning. Shiny green, wavy leaves with coppery brown felt on the leaf undersides. Large, white fragrant flowers spring through summer. Makes an excellent screening hedge or standalone tree for a smaller garden. A seedling variation of Little Gem. Vigorous. A small rounded shrub with fresh lime green foliage and small, heavily scented cream flowers streaked with purple. Sun to shade. The shrub assumes a looser more open form when grown in shade. Individuals grown in sunny situations tend to be more compact with denser foliage that is lighter and more yellow green. Prefers humus rich, well drained, slightly acidic soil. From the Three Kings Islands, Tecomanthe speciosa is a vigorous climber with large handsome glossy leaves. The large tubular cream flowers are borne in bunches during the winter months. Tui visit flowers for nectar. Frost sensitive but can be grown successfully in colder districts under the shelter of trees. Ideal grown up a terrace pole, strong trellis, up into trees. Takes some years to flower.
